The Foods Innovation Centre Unilever ‘Hive’ Receives BREEAM Award

The Foods Innovation Centre Unilever ‘Hive’ in Wageningen has been awarded Best New Build Utility at the BREEAM Awards – one of the most important international awards for sustainable construction.

Congratulations to Paul de Ruiter Architects who received the award in London on 10 July.

To stimulate co-creation and exchange of knowledge in the global search for healthy and sustainable foods, Unilever decided to centralise its Foods R&D facilities at a state-of-the-art new Innovation Centre in the Netherlands. The project was commissioned by Unilever and Dura Vermeer and designed by Paul de Ruiter Architects. The interior of the purpose-built facility nicknamed 'Hive' was developed by Fokkema & Partners in close collaboration with the employees.

With a BREEAM-NL Outstanding certification of 93.24%, Hive, located in Wageningen, is the most sustainable laboratory building in the world. Nutritionists, start-ups, researchers, and students collaborate there on the food innovations of the future.
