The central atrium is buzzing with students. They gather on seating islands in the middle of the space, while a line forms at the coffee bar. Others make their way up the stairs to the mezzanine, where natural light streams in through the roof. Welcome to the newly renovated Herta Mohr Building, the beating heart of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University.

Space for Light and Connection

The original design by Van Stigt, recognisable by its iconic mushroom-shaped concrete columns, has been thoughtfully preserved. De Zwarte Hond carried out a circular renovation, replacing the former inner courtyard with an impressive covered atrium. This new central space connects the various faculties and features a transparent roof that floods the area with natural light. Where once there were narrow corridors and closed walls, open spaces and large round windows now create a fresh and transparent aesthetic. The wooden ceilings from the old structure have been repurposed as wall panelling in the atrium. Greenery in the seating areas provides a sense of calm amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the atrium, while sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems prepare the building for the future.

The visual language serves as a common thread throughout the building, appearing in walls, furniture, and even the coffee bar in the atrium.

Colors, Patterns, and Cultures: A Visual Harmony

The building accommodates more than 700 study and workspaces, two lecture halls, meeting rooms and common areas, and the libraries for both African Studies and Middle Eastern Studies. The challenge was to integrate these diverse disciplines—African Studies and Middle Eastern Studies—into a cohesive whole. Fokkema & Partners addressed this challenge by assigning each discipline its distinct color and pattern, reflecting its unique identity. From the organic, flowing shapes of African Studies to the geometric patterns of Middle Eastern languages. This visual language serves as a common thread throughout the building, appearing in walls, furniture, and even the coffee bar in the atrium, which features a striking light installation. This visual cohesion transforms every corner into a recognizable landmark and aids in orientation within the space.

The Herta Mohr Building is more than just a place to study or work. It is a vibrant meeting ground where history, culture, and the future converge—an architectural masterpiece that resonates with the dynamic energy of its students.
