How do you unlock hidden potential?
Marieke van Schaaijk: ‘’As passionate advocates for sustainable design, we find immense joy in exploring the transformative power of renovation. It’s a journey that not only promotes sustainability but also reveals unexpected qualities."
While stripping away layers of time, we reveal architectural details that tell stories.
Our renovation projects provide a unique opportunity to breathe new life into forgotten structures, awakening their potential and preserving our shared history. Some of the most exciting aspects of renovation are, the hidden qualities that emerge during the process. While stripping away layers of time, we find architectural details that tell stories of the past, the original connection between building parts, now restored in The Hotelschool or the beautiful concrete columns in The Palace of Justice. These elements add richness and authenticity to the space, and inspire us to add a new layer to the design.
Renovation reduces the demand for new materials, minimising resource extraction and landfill waste. By repurposing existing structures, we extend their lifespan and decrease the carbon footprint associated with new construction. Moreover, renovation projects can salvage valuable materials, incorporating reclaimed wood, bricks, and fixtures, releaving the pressure on natural resources. By embracing renovation, we conserve the embodied energy of existing buildings and contribute to a circular economy, where waste becomes a valuable resource.
Renovation, with its sustainable approach, presents us with an opportunity to reimagine the future of our communities. It is a testament to our commitment to environmental challenges and our responsibility to leave a positive legacy for future generations.
